Try the Tithe

a trust test to open my hands in a closed-off world

Make a Commitment

We all need practical help and encouragement to take important steps of faith.

This page is an encouragement to practice the Biblical pattern of returning to the Lord at least 10% (a "tithe") of what he has given you.The economy and our personal financial realities can make us fearful and forgetful. God calls us to freedom and faith, remembering God's provision. God sees this as so important that he even said to his people: "Test me in this" (Malachi 3). In the midst of fear God says, "Try me!" Countless people have done just that and discovered that God can be trusted and that life "works better" when we trust and obey God with our finances.

God is inviting all of us to test him—to do an experiment—by prayerfully following these steps:

  1. PRAY: Read and thoughtfully consider the scriptures listed on the back of the card. Honestly tell the Lord your fears or concerns about returning the first portion back to him. Seek God's leading.
  2. DECIDE: Carefully read the statement on the opposite side and check the box indicating what you are being led to do at this time.
  3. TRY THE TITHE: If you are not tithing, try it! For 90 days (through June 15), whenever you receive income, give a minimum of 10% to the Lord's work through the church.
  4. WATCH: See what happens. Watch for God's faithful provision. Discover the deep sense of joy that comes through obedience. Experience the freedom that is found through trust and letting go. And thank God for his spiritual blessing and care in your life as you increase your faith and give with trust and joy.

My/Our Decision

Recognizing God's love for me and authority over me, I choose to honor Christ and put the Lord first in every area of my life, including my finances. I want to avoid the dangers of debt, be more generous with others, and follow the Biblical giving model of tithing. Therefore,

  • I will accept the challenge to trust God with my finances and begin to tithe for 90 days
  • I will continue to tithe, giving the Lord the first 10%
  • I currently tithe and will begin to give sacrificially, above the tithe
  • I will continue to give above the tithe, increasing as God leads, trusting God and enjoying His blessing
