Mathare Valley, 5 km from the center of Nairobi, is one of the oldest slums in all of Africa. Of Nairobi's 2.5 million urban poor, nearly 1 million live in an area less than one square mile called the Mathare Valley. Housing is inadequate and plumbing is almost non-existent. Unemployment is high and so is the crime rate. In these extreme conditions, thousands of parents struggle to raise their children in physical and spiritual health. Hope is a rare commodity.
